Danakil Depression Tours from Mekelle

Tour Details & Itinerary

3 Days and 2 Nights

Day 1: Drive from Mekele

Across the Afar lowlands toward Erta Ale, arrive at the desert base, then trek up to the crater in late afternoon to witness the glowing lava lake at sunset and spend the night camping near the rim under the stars (trek and camping are supported by local Afar guides and camels to carry gear)

Day 2: Drive to Erta Ale

Early, drive to Hamed/Ahmad Ela and Lake Assale (Karum), spend the afternoon walking the vast white salt flats, meet Afar salt miners at work and watch the long camel caravans being loaded and leaving for the highlands at sunset — an unforgettable living-history salt-mining spectacle — then overnight in a basic desert camp.

Day 3:  Visit Dalol then Drive to Mekele

Start before dawn for a full visit to the Dallol hydrothermal fields to see the surreal sulfur terraces, acidic pools and salt chimneys, return via salt-cutting sites to observe more of the traditional salt-mining process and camel trains, then drive back across the Afar plains to arrive in Mekele by late afternoon.
