Day 1: Mekele to Hamed Ela

Drive from Mekele across the dramatic Afar lowlands toward Hamed Ela, passing volcanic formations and small Afar villages; arrive at the campsite for lunch and rest, then in the afternoon explore Lake Asale and the endless white salt flats, visit Afar salt miners cutting salt blocks, and watch the long camel caravans crossing the desert, ending the day with a breathtaking sunset on the salt desert before overnighting in a basic open-air camp in Hamed Ela.

Day 2: Hamed Ela Dallol Then drive to Mekele

Start early and drive to the extraordinary Dallol hydrothermal area to witness its colorful sulfur pools, acid springs, salt mountains, and unique rock formations; continue to nearby salt canyons and the traditional salt-cutting sites to observe Afar miners and camel trains at work, then return through the desert plains and drive back to Mekele, arriving by early or mid-afternoon.
